Electrotactile stimulation is a higher-tech method of receiving somewhat similar (although more surprising) results, and it's based on the idea that the brain can interpret sensory information even if it's not provided via the "natural" channel. The brain then recreates the images from analysis of the impulse patterns. The multiple channels that carry sensory information to the brain, from the eyes, ears and skin, for instance, are set up in a similar manner to perform similar activities. All sensory information sent to the brain is carried by nerve fibers in the form of patterns of impulses, and the impulses end up in the different sensory centers of the brain for interpretation. To substitute one sensory input channel for another, you need to correctly encode the nerve signals for the sensory event and send them to the brain through the alternate channel. The brain appears to be flexible when it comes to interpreting sensory input. You can train it to read input from, say, the tactile channel, as visual or balance information, and to act on it accordingly.|Road trips are great, but with gas prices so high, they can be expensive. What can you do to save some dough along the way? Ever since the automobile became widely available in the early 20th century, road trips have been America's go-to way to travel. Just put your finger on the map and go: For the price of a tank of gas, one can travel at leisure to any number of exciting destinations. Ever seen the red rocks in Moab? The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? What about the big city lights of Times Square in New York City? No matter which destination fires your fancy, a road trip allows you to travel at your own speed and stop at will to explore along the way. With gas prices in 2011 hovering near $4 per gallon, however, the good old American road trip has become less and less of a bargain and more of a wallet-buster. Some tourist attractions and destinations are going so far as to offer incentives to offset the high cost of gasoline. Tests run by the Environmental Working Group have reported that there are approximately 315 pollutants in the tap water that Americans drink. These tests are said to have been taken from over 20 million records obtained from state officials. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the authority, under the SDWA, to create rules for providers of public drinking H2O with regard to testing well water. The EPA requires that public H2O systems by running a periodic drinking H2O analysis searching to ensure that specific, dangerous contaminants are not present in the water source. It is required by the law that EPA approved analytical methods be used when analyzing water samples. A drinking H2O analysis typically determines how much of a contaminant is in a water sample. Analytical methods describe how to collect, preserve, and store the sample; procedures for concentrating, separating, identifying and quantifying contaminants present in a sample; quality control criteria the analytical data must meet and how to report the results of the analysis. The report entitled Estimated Use of Water in the United States in 2005 issued by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that 14% of Americans obtain their drinking H2O from private wells that are not protected under the SDWA. It is up to each household to learn about and understand the water they are drinking, especially households acquiring their water from a private well. The EPA recommends that households perform a drinking H2O analysis by testing well water that comes into their homes once every three years, if not annually. As the risks are high, it is essential that United States citizens seek a greater knowledge of the water that they are drinking. emilio lozoya
